Raising petrol price in order to control traffic is one of the effective ways that some countries adopt. Although rising fuel prices increases the cost of living, it also has benefits. In this essay, I will mention some reasons as to why this approach can be successful.
It can act as a prohibitive factor for people to use their own private vehicles. When they have to pay much more than public transport, people themselves are more inclined to use less personal means. Therefore, the families can save more money.
Rising fuel prices will encourage people to make more use of public transportation. This in turn reduces the traffic of personal vehicles in the city. When people come to the conclusion that the cost of public transportation is much more affordable than personal transportation, they definitely use public transportation.
When citizens pay more for fuel, the government generates more revenue so the government can spend more on urban infrastructure, which improves the quality of life in the city. For example, governments can increase the number of public vehicles with this revenue from the increase in fuel prices. And this can increase the quality of life of people.
In conclusion, in spite of the many advantages increasing petrol price has, its disadvantages should be considered too, and better ways should be chosen.
