Legalizing Prostitution

Should we legalize prostitution? There are many arguments made on both sides of this issue. This paper will focus on a few of the most popular reasons cited in the resource articles used in the research for this paper.

One of the most cited reasons for legalizing prostitution is that the government can benefit from new taxation in business and personal taxes. According to Debatingdebating Europe, it has been estimated that the legalization within the U.S. could provide the government with $20 billion dollars a year (Arguments for and against Legalizing Prostitution, 2016). Every other job in America requires that taxes are paid, so if prostitution is legalized and is considered a profitable business, then taxes should have to be paid.

The second reason is that people are for prostitution being legalized is that it is a victimless crime. According to ProCon.org victimization occurs when someone gets assaulted or raped by a professional who knows what they are doing. Research says that prostitution is considered a trade of different types of services for money. ProCon.org says that prostitution should be legalized but called something less offensive, such as sex worker or licensed companions. While many people are for the legalization of prostitution there is also many people who are against legalizing prostitution. The main reason that people do not want prostitution to be legalized is because it is immoral. Researchers say that women should not be subjected to selling themselves for money. manyMany women feel like they have to sell themselves for money especially when they are in tough financial situation.
