Background
Every year, first entering students with disabilities atentering the University of Limpopo for the first time apply for funding from NSFAS, and this comes with the provision forof assistive devices and human aidaids. Some of these devices include laptops, wheelchairs, spectacles, Portableportable readers, and supportive software such as ZoomText and JAWS.
Purpose
I’m writing this as ato request to financefinancing to facilitate the purchasingpurchase of assistive devices for 2020, as per the supplied quotations. Since onlineOnline teaching and learning havehas commenced at UL. due to COVID 19 studentsStudents with disabilities, - particularly the visually impaired, - are the most affected by COVID-19 and therefore they need assistive devices to be able to access online teaching and learning.
Financial implications
Students with disabilities wrote a memorandum through their SRC representative, the Disability Desk Chairperson (DDC), proposing their supplier of choice; owing to the disability slogan “Nothing for us, without us”. They, they recommended and beseeched that the 2020 NSFAS assistive devices be provided by the Moloko Maloba Group Pty (Ltd) company, since the owner has a disability (Blindness) and, according to them, knows all the important requirements ofthat an assistive device that has to behas to have before being given to a student with a disability.
Recommendations
As the interim director of the Reakgona Disability Centre, I hereby confirm that Moloko Maloba Group Pty Ltd is a fully registered private company that prioritizeprioritizes the needs of persons with disabilities, and I further recommend that this company serveserves our Centre with the latest technology and more relevant equipment that could satisfy our students’ personal and educational needs.
