Throughout episode 1one of the social experiment, ‘Go“Go Back To Where You Came From’From”, the participants are divided into two groups of three and stay with people who have completed their asylum seeker journey to Australia. Raye, Raquel and Roderick start off their journey by going to Albury, where they are taken to the Masoudi family. The Masoudi family revealed to the participants that they came to Australia by plane under a U.N. re-settlement visa agreement. Raye is incredulous of Maisara’s experiences in the camps, and this leads to her first realisation, “ I had no idea it was so bad. It’s not easy for me to hear that”. Raye makes a personal connection over the childchild’s loss with Maisara, and demonstrates a willingness to learn more. Raye’s individual experience impacts on her journey throughout the series as Raye had a number of miscarriages, so when she sees kids who are less fortunate, this upsets her due to her wanting to have her own kids. Raquel’s individual experience with African people displays to the audience her self-justified racist side. stating as she was departing the Mausadi familyShe stated, “Like, yes, this family is nice. thatThat does not mean that every other African or refugee is going to be as nice as this family. I’m not going to have African friends”friends.” This reinforces that she is a racist, but as Raquel got to know the Mausadi family more, she got closer with them, which resulted in her eventually showing a sense of empathy. Episode 1one of ‘Go Back To Where You Came From’ clearly shows the audience an insight ofinto the human experience from a different perspective and from the experience of other people.
Furthermore, in episode 2two of the challenging social experiment, ‘Go“Go Back To Where You Came From’From”, Raye and Raquel have moved on.
