Bildungsroman is a genre about identity quest; the protagonist goes through different experiences, which includes going through sexual experiences, and, after one specific psychological crisis, the protagonist recognizes his or her identity and purpose in the world (lecture). Bildungsroman is mostly seen as a male genre, as men had more freedom (lecture) and were enforced to be in the public sphere. Seth’s It’s a Good Life, If You Don’t Weaken is graphic novel, in whereich the protagonist, Seth, tries to find his identity. Alice Munro’s Who Do You Think You Are? Iis a novel in whereich Munro tries to write Bildungsroman by showing the journey of Rose. Seth’s identity quest involves trying on the identity of being an obsessed cartoonist, whereas, Rose’s identity quest involves trying on different identities,: a wife, a lover, and an actress. Seth’s quest follows the gender script and he learns to make his identity broader than being an artist. However, Rose’s quest differs from the gender script and, thus, she is left unsuccessful in recognizing her role in the world.
