oOn jJune 29th, 1867, a special passenger train plunged into the rRichelieu rRiver near bBeloeil, killing 97 German immigrants and 2 train conductors.
tThe train headed toward Montreal on the gGrand tTrunk rRailway and went through a drawbridge left open for the passage of barges on the river below. rRescuers from mMontreal and local residents worked day and night to recover victims.
