• I was working on tunnel grit blasting weekend possession as a site person in charge. I was taking over from another site person in charge. When I came down to assess the work progress, I've realiszed that only 50% of the pre-planned work was has been accomplished. I was surprised, as no preparations have been made to enable me to start work immediately.

I was about to start a 12 hours shift and we were having this disagreement. I felt like I had to defuse situation and break up the tension between us. I appeared to be very calm and was talking slowly., Sso I said to him that I knew he was working hard and was exhausted and this was not about what his gang or my gang had accomplished. I reminded him that we all were working together as one team to achieve the same goal, and the end result would be the team work result. After that, I told him that this was the first position on this project and most likely we would encounter difficulties. My colleague relaxed a little when he saw that I wasn't attacking him and explained that they could not start work untill late because of technical problems.

• I have contacted the project manager and reported the incident. However, the project manager insisted on carrying on working. I was surprised and disappointed by his response. I told him that we were doing this job for a living and everyone deserved a safe work place. He responded that he would supply us with the extractor the day after. I replied that I was glad that he had mentioned this, because I was about to ask him for the same thing. I said that I understood how he felt and that I appreciated he wanted the job done, but the worksite was contaminated, and it was life threatening to stay in the tunnel. I suggested to him to think about the consequences and what we would do if someone would collapse. So I proposed to him to do another task to fill the gap and concentrate on this job the next day when extraction would be implemented.
