The present paper describes an automated batch gas production (GP) system consisting of 3 arrays of 12 glass bottles, mounted on a reciprocating base plate, inside an incubating chamber. A pressure sensor and electromechanical valve assembly were installed on each bottle cap, which made possible an automated gas pressure record and venting of generated gases at pre-defined intervals. Two incubations were conducted, where the GP of six different feeds was measured automatedically, or manually, using a digital pressure gauge. With automated equipment, pressure data wereas obtained with 15-min intervals during a 48-h incubation period and recorded on a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, resulting in 185 head-space pressure measurements for each bottle. With manual measurement, incubations were performed with the nominal 60-mL serum bottle, where headspace pressure was manually read using a digital pressure gauge and released at 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24, 36, and 48 h of incubation.
